Several weeks ago, I had lunch at Panera Bread and with my sandwich I was offered my choice of a Baguette or an apple. In the interest of choosing the healthy route, I opted for the apple. I returned to work and proceeded to eat my lunch - and I finished everything but the apple. That evening, as I cleared off my desk before heading home, I grabbed the apple and put it in the console of my car. Thinking nothing of it, I left the apple in the car and went on to school. Then, for the next few days, as I entered and exited my car, I noticed the apple still sitting there, in my console. Several more days passed and I spied the apple sitting, just as I had left it. At this point it seemed a bit odd to me that the apple looked completely undisturbed - not a hint of spoiling, not a bruise, not a blemish. Finally, one morning, well into the third week of the apple’s ‘ripening’ I decided to take it into work and show it off as I recanted the story above. Needless to say my co-workers were equally astounded at the longevity of this fruit. Following that day of work, the apple returned to the car where it still remains. I was almost certain that my handling of it would hasten - actually begin the deterioration process. I was wrong. I have decided that this resilient apple will stay in my car until it begins to show some sign of going bad. More on this later…
